Table Talk: Edgy Walnut Table for Designer Duo

Table Talk: Edgy Walnut Table for Designer Duo

Posted by Edgework Admin on

Let's Talk Tables. We build a lot of them... more than any other piece of furniture. It's our most requested type of project, and no two are exactly alike. If you're not familiar with how Edgework Creative got its start, meet the Remley's. It will come as no surprise that all of this began when they built their own custom dining room table.

A Labor of Love

All of the furniture we make is completely handcrafted, which means that we become deeply invested in each piece. Our part of the story typically ends once each piece leaves our shop destined for its forever home. For the projects we really love, it's a bittersweet moment.

Fortunately, our clients become our friends, and we're able to check in on our work from time to time. Here is the story of what we do from a different point of view. Join us for some table talk at the Kindred Table table with Catherine Williamson of Beginning In The Middle.

What's the first meal you shared at this table?

Our first meal at our table was incredibly special. My family planned to visit us for Christmas from different parts of the country, in hopes that they’d get to meet our daughter, Bianca, whose due date was December, 28th. She arrived early on the 23rd, and our first meal together was all of us gathered on Christmas Eve when we returned from the hospital. The table is 8’ long and fit all 12 of us comfortably for meals during the week everyone was here. It was such a special time to have a place to gather together, and a meal I’ll remember forever.

What was your inspiration for the style and design of this table?

Modern, streamlined and edgy. We designed our home to be a blend of both modern & traditional elements (a modern Victorian). We kept the architecture very traditional by adding molding & Parisian-inspired mantels and saving as much of the original detail as we could. We then layered in modern lighting, furniture & finishes. This table makes such a statement in our dining room - we get compliments on it all the time!

How does your table fit into your life?

We use this table for eating, as well as working on designs and our blog. We work from home, and having a roomy table is great for spreading out blueprints, design plans, and having meetings.

What’s your favorite thing about your custom table?

I love the brassy finish on the metal base, and that it is completely SOLID. We have had all sorts of spills on this wood, and it has held up so well. It’s nice not to have to worry about the finish.

Was the investment in a custom dining table worth it? Would you do it again?

As designers who love aesthetics as well as practicality, we tend to invest in custom pieces that’ll get lots of use. A table is one of those things. The durability of this table far exceeds all of the tables we’ve purchased from big box stores in the past and is designed uniquely for our space.  We knew we couldn’t get that anywhere else, and we would 100% do it again.
